What about my KiwiSaver?
It doesn't work the way people assume.
You've been contributing to KiwiSaver for years.
Without a clear Will
- KiwiSaver has no 'nominated beneficiary' like some overseas schemes — it forms part of your estate.
- Without a Will, it's distributed under intestacy rules.
With a Will
- Your KiwiSaver balance is distributed as part of your estate, according to your Will.
- For smaller balances, providers may release funds with less paperwork — a Will still makes it smoother.
Practical guidance for NZ
- Treat KiwiSaver as an estate asset, not a separate pay-out.
